How to Get an Accurate Metal Fabrication Quote
A quote is only as accurate as the information behind it. Missing details are the number one reason quotes take longer than they should or come back higher than expected once the real specs surface. Here’s what to gather before you request a quote, so you get a number you can actually rely on.
1. A Dimensioned Drawing or CAD File
The single most useful thing you can provide is a complete drawing, ideally as a CAD file (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Pro Engineering formats all work). The drawing should include full dimensions, not just a rendering, so the part can be programmed and priced accurately.
2. Material Specification
Tell us exactly what material the part needs to be made from, including grade if applicable (for example, 304 vs. 316 stainless, or a specific aluminum alloy). Material choice affects cost, lead time, and which processes are even possible, so “steel” alone usually isn’t enough to quote precisely.
3. Quantity
Unit pricing changes significantly based on volume. Let us know if you need a single prototype, a small batch, or an ongoing production run, since setup costs are amortized differently across each.
4. Tolerance Requirements
If your part requires tight tolerance work, say so and specify the actual tolerance needed. Calling out tolerances only where they matter (rather than tightening every dimension by default) also helps keep cost down, since tighter tolerances generally mean more time and inspection.
5. Finish and Coating Requirements
Does the part need a specific surface finish, powder coat, blasting, or corrosion protection? Finishing requirements affect both cost and lead time, so it’s worth specifying up front rather than adding it after the quote is issued.
6. Applicable Standards or Certifications
If the part is going into an application that requires ASME compliance, AWS-certified welding, or another industry standard, let us know at the quoting stage. This affects both the process and the documentation that comes with the finished part.
7. Timeline
Let us know your target delivery date, especially if it’s tight. Lead time can affect scheduling and, in some cases, which process makes the most sense.
What If You Don’t Have All of This Yet?
That’s fine. Send what you have, even if it’s a rough sketch or a sample part, and we’ll work with you to fill in the gaps before finalizing a quote.
